Onion Pakoda

Onion pakoda  are deep fried snack that are made with gram flour, spices and onion. Onion pakoda is the most popular snack especially during monsoon. This pakodas  are usually served with green chutney or sweet chutney. It can be made in 20 minutes so its best to make for unexpected guests. Rain, tea and pakoda  is the best combo ever!


2 medium size onion thin slices

1tsp fennel seeds

2 green chilli finely chopped

1 inch ginger grated

2 tbsp chopped coriander leaves

A pinch of turmeric powder

1 tsp red chilli powder

½ cup gram flour

1 tbsp rice flour

¼ cup water

Oil for deep frying

Salt to taste


Crush the fennel  seeds  in a mortar and pestle.

In a bowl combine gram flour, rice flour, spices and salt . Mix well until it is well combined.

Now add the onion slices and mix well. Add  5 tablespoons water  (more water if required )and mix well  until you get a thick batter. Do not add more water. Add water just for binding.

Heat  oil in a pan. Drop the pakoda  in to hot oil and fry for about 5 minutes. Fry until both sides turn to golden  colour and crispy. Once cooked drain them on a paper towel.

Serve hot with tea.
