Mangalore Bun/ Banana Bun

Post No.106

After the delicious Sweet Pulao from Jammu, now we are travelling to south to discover another delicious dish.  Banana Bun/Mangalore Bun from the Udupi –Mangalore region of Karnataka – Mildly sweet fried bread made with mashed banana, flour and sugar.  I had tasted this bread when I visited Udupi. It was so soft, fluffy and tasty pooris. As it was tasty I wanted to try this banana poori some time. Finally I managed to do this week. It is simple to make and it has banana flavour. You can have this for breakfast, or as snack or for evening tea. This recipe works best with over ripe bananas.

Ingredients

2 ripened banana

2 cups of maida/all purpose flour

2 tbsp sugar

¼ cup yogurt/curd

1 Tsp cumin seed

½ tsp salt

Pinch of baking soda

Oil for frying

Method

Peel   the bananas and mash them well with a fork.

Add the other ingredients and knead the mixture to form a  smooth dough. It should be of chapati dough consistency.

Cover the dough and set aside for 4 to 5 hours.

In a  pan heat oil on a medium flame.

Make lemon sized balls of the dough. Using a rolling pin flatten them into slightly thick poories .

Gently slide these poories into hot oil and deep fry them until they have turned brown on both sides.

Remove from oil and place them on a kitchen towel to drain any excess oil.

Serve hot with coconut chutney, kurma or potato bhaji.
